Climate adaptation and regeneration in Sicily

Adattamento e rigenerazione in Sicilia

This course offers a region-specific understanding of climate change and socioecological responses based on a multidisciplinary approach uniting historical ecology, climate science, permaculture, anthropology and social sciences.

Course description

This course offers a theoretical and experiential knowledge of ongoing adaptation and regeneration processes in Sicily.

The first part of the course provides an overview of the historical ecology of Sicily, including past climate change and human impacts related to food systems, socioeconomic organization and colonial-like  occupation of the island. Based on this ecological history and current climatic trends, science-based predictions are then made for the future decades.

The second part focuses on adaptation and regeneration in response to anthropogenic climate change and related sociopolitical trends. Adaptation strategies are drawn from indigenous practices in semiarid and arid regions, local traditions (eg. grani antichi siciliani), permaculture design and regenerative climate solutions. The last module focuses on the social and cultural dimensions of ecological regeneration, highlighting effective practices for trauma response, community-building, civic participation, activism and grassroot democracy that are essential in facing the challenges present and ahead.

The course provides several field trips and hands-on activities for the participants to directly experience ongoing processes of adaptation and regeneration in the Sicilian context, through direct engagement with places, people, projects related to the course topics.
